The Reading Police Academy is located on the campus of
Alvernia College, in Francis hall, 400 Saint Bernardine
St. Reading PA. The Reading Police Academy has been a
certified academy since February 1976, with MPOETC (Municipal
Police Officers Education and Training Commission) the
Reading Police Academy is operated by the Reading Police
Department. The majority of our instructors are Full-Time
Police officers who provide on the job insight to there
instruction. We also utilize the knowledge of the District
Attorneys office by using Assistant District Attorneys
to instruct certain course material.
The Basic Training Course prescribed by ACT 120 is designed
to provide students with the initial skills necessary
to begin their police careers. Two types of students attend
the academy. The first are newly hired police officers
enrolled to satisfy the requirements of ACT 120. The second
are pre-service students who are not hired by a police
depart. The pre-service students are taking the course
in the hopes of enhancing their chances of police employment.
The course consists of 775 hours and is completed in
a 20-week program. Classes run from 0730-1600 hours Monday
through Friday with a few exceptions that are noted on
your schedule when you start the course. A 1/2 hour is
provided for lunch. There are 2 full time classes a year.
One that starts in mid January through June and the second
starts in the beginning of July through the end of November.
Also, any official holidays that occur during training
are observed.
Applications are sent out approximately 2 month prior
to the start date of the class. The applications will
be date and time stamped as they are received. No applications
will be accepted after the deadline set for each class.
Upon successful completion of all facets of the application
process, including the psychological examination, the
class will filled on a first come basis. Seating is very
limited. It is beneficial to complete all application
forms in a timely manner.
Should the number of applications received exceed the
allotted number of class seats, newly hired police officers
will be given preference. Applicants will be accepted
on a first-received, first-accepted basis.
