Snow & Ice Removal Ord Summary

Property owners, Tenants and Occupants are required to clear snow and ice from a path of at least 36” in width AND from an area with 36” of a fire hydrant on every City sidewalk. Properties located in the central business district – downtown – are required to clear the snow and ice from all sidewalk areas. Snow and Ice removal must occur:

· Within 2 hours or at the beginning of the business hours the following day, which ever period is shorter in the downtown business district

· Within 4 hours of daylight after the cessation of any such fall, whichever period is longer on all other City sidewalks.

· Within 8 hours by the operators of any public transportation system using buses, trackless trolleys, trains or street cars

If snow and ice on a sidewalk has become so hard that it cannot be removed without likelihood of damage to the sidewalk, the person charged with its removal shall use cinder, abrasive or melting agent on the sidewalk to make travel reasonably safe.

Snow must be removed from the roofs of any building or structure within the City to prevent it from falling on the sidewalk, roadway or any public right of way within the first 6 hours of daylight after the cessation of any fall of snow, sleet or freezing rain.

No person shall deposit any snow or ice against a fire hydrant, sidewalk, roadway or at any loading (or unloading) area of a public transportation system.

In the event snow is not removed the City may remove the snow or ice and sue the responsible party for the costs. A citation may be issued for non compliance - with a fine of not less than $100.

Complaints about the lack of snow removal should be directed to the Desk Sergeant at 610.655.6116.
